Our Fall Maintenance Plan Includes:
Pond Netting
This process is usually done in early fall before the leaves turn color. We install a temporary frame with a net that blocks leaves from entering your pond. We will return and remove the net before the first heavy snowfall.
Pond Cleaning
One of the most beneficial times of year in Chicagoland to clean your pond is in the fall. This will reduce the amount of accumulated substance, like muck or fish waste, on the bottom of the pond before the winter season arrives. The build-up of these pollutants can potentially harm or prove fatal to fish over the winter months.
Fall Pond Cleaning Consists of:
- Draining the pond to a depth of six inches
- Placing fish in containers of original pond water, followed by draining the remainder of the water
- Power washing and removing debris from the bottom
- Cleaning of all necessary components such as filter pads, skimmer, and pump
- Adjusting rocks if needed
- Adding de-chlorinator if needed, start refilling the pond, and reintroduce fish
Ponds Inc of Illinois will also replace any burned-out bulbs for an additional fee. We will also fertilize potted plants or divide and repot plants for an additional fee.

Winter in the Chicagoland area means extended temperatures below freezing, which will cause your pond to freeze. You can opt to keep your pond running for the winter, or shut it down and add a pond heater. Either way, certain steps need to be taken.

You can opt to keep your pond running for the winter, or shut it down and add a pond heater. Either way, certain steps need to be taken.
The pump size will need to be adequate to keep operating throughout the winter, as long as it is running continuously. There may be an instance during extended sub-zero temperatures that may lead to excessive ice build-up. If this occurs, it may be necessary to turn the system off, until the ice is melted and water flow can be restored.
Another thing to consider is evaporation. Although it is not quite as much as during the summer months, it will still occur. Along with evaporation, there might be some ice damming that causes the water to flow over the edge of the liner. In either case, supplemental water might have to be carried by buckets or a hose extended from inside the house, as outside faucets should be turned off to prevent pipes from freezing and cracking.
Although keeping your pond or waterfall running will provide some beautiful winter scenery, over half of the pond owners shut their ponds down during the harsh winter months. Depending on your decision, it is important to take the necessary steps to preserve your aquatic life, as well as the pump.
